Work has been hideously busy lately and weekends have been taken up with Christmas shopping and Christmas drinks so I haven't had much time to keep up with my flist so apologies if I owe anyone any comments. No sex, no violence, no blood and guts and yet this is without a doubt one of the most distressing Supernatural fics I've ever read. Little Sammy is taken away from his family by "kindly" concerned adults at his school. Sam's fear and confusion over what is happening to him is incredibly upsetting to read. Utterly gut wrenching.

Companion tale fleshing out the background of Dead Men Tell Great Tales . Sam dies confronting the demon and becomes a reaper. The confrontation with the demon is incredibly gripping - my heart was in my throat reading it. Dean's pain and grief (which blinds him to Sam's presence) is heartbreaking and hard to read. The story effortlessly weaves in familiar characters Bobby, Missouri, Ellen, Ash and Jo in a compelling way that the show has yet to manage and also features an outstanding original character in The Preacher - someone I would happily read more about.

Extraordinary vivid story which shifts from one realty t another as Sam moves from one dream to the next changing ages and locations. The image of Dean trapped in the everlasting hallway with Bloody Mary behind him is very unsettling whilst the image of little Sam curled up safe at Dean's side in one of the never ending parade of motel rooms really did stay with me. Really highly recommended.

More zombies! This is an AU of poisontaster and mona1347's Lightverse which is an angsty series set in the future where Dean is married with three children but he and Sam can't stop sleeping with each other. Very strong and effective character study - plus zombies which I love!


Care and Feeding by fools_game

Listed as gen but the last paragraph has distinctly Wincest tones to it.

Sam gets cursed and turns into a cat. This is something of a qualified rec because to be honest I didn't find Dean, John or Sam's voices to be quite right - her John voice in particularly is fairly weak.But that doesn't really matter because this is the schmoopiest most adorable fic I've read in a very long time. Dean and little kitty Sam are the cutest things ever. It's the sort of fic that even makes a hardened cynic like myself smile!


Speaking of zombies 28 Weeks Later (the sequel to 28 Days Later) is apparently going to be filmed just across the road from me on Sunday night!No Cillian Murphy sadly (it's one of those cheap B list cast sequels) but apparently Robert Carlyle and Harold Parrineau are in it. I think I might wander along and see if I can watch the filming. Apparently there will be gunfire and exciting lighting effects. I'm so there!

If I may self-pimp for a moment I've now finished reading all of eighth_horizon's And Fools Shine On for spn_audio_novel. I'd love it if some of my shiny flist would check out the recordings and let me know what you think.

Finally if anyone was thinking of going to Asylum next year (the UK con that Jared is appearing at) the hotel is apparently nearly fully booked (it's a small hotel) so if you're undecided as to whether to go or not it might be worth booking the hotel now and worrying about your ticket later. You have to book the rooms through the event organiser but believe me you don;t want to get stuck in an overflow hotel. That happened to me once at a con and it completely sucked.

Looks like everybody decided that the best cure for all the angst currently being displayed on the show was to write scorching hot porn. Damn they are some insanely smoking hot stories out there at the moment. These are some of my favourites:

Despite having possibly the worst title ever this is pure wonderful, comforting schmoop. Dean nearly gets hypothermia on a hunt and Sam needs to take care of him.

There have been surprisingly few codas written to the episode (possibly because any of the post Devil's Trap fics work just as well for this episode) but here are the best of the stories out there:

Short, sharp and painfully raw look at Sam and a practically suicidal Dean coping with their father's death. Features a somewhat unnecessary reference to an original character which momentarily pulled me out of the story (unless the piece is part of an established universe I'm not keen on authors cross referencing characters from their other stories. It's just too cute).

Sam and Dean buring themselves in each other in order to deal with the pain of losing John. The sense of desperation and agony that the boys are feeling is strongly conveyed.

Sam and Dean grieving their own way and being constantly surprised by what reminds them of their father. Dean's final breakdown is very well portrayed. Features the same original character as mikhale's story.

The original story killed me dead - immortality as tragedy with a seemingly immortal Dean outliving everyone he loves. The original piece was Dean's pov. The remix focuses on all of Sam's descendants who keep Dean company over the generations. I love how with only a paragraph or less for each person the author skillfully gives each of Dean's companions distinct personalities and quirks and tells the tale of their lives. The thought of Dean being continually left by those in his life because living with him and the hollowness inside him is too hard for them just breakes my heart. Deeply, profoundly haunting story which lingers long after you've read it.

Normally I'm not a fan of evil possessed Sam stories as I've yet to find an author who has managed to write evil sam with any degree of subtlety. But this story is surprisingly effective. Sam is possessed and promptly begins to systematically torture Dean both physically and sexually. And Dean..just takes it. The concept of a Dean who is willing to accept whatever poor treatment Sam dishes out to him simply because he's terrified to be alone is painful. Dean as abused spouse. Difficult to read and with a suitably bleak ending.

I love how Sam continually tries to reassure Dean with touch that he isn't going to leave him but Dean is never convinced.

If you read enough fan fic you'll guess the twist pretty quickly but it's a testament to the strength of the story that it's none the less affecting for it.

I love the current Five Things meme so here are some of my favourites:

Five Times Dean Told Sam He Loved Him by furiouscupofcat

I confess I almost didn't click on this because I actually struggle with the concept of Dean declaring his undying love - it always rubs me the wrong way when I read it in fic but this story is all about Dean showing Sam how much he loves him without ever saying the words. The first drabble is wonderful - an incredibly vivid depiction of a little and terrified Dean running from the burning house with a squealing Sam in his arms. And the last one is pure unadulterated, wonderful schmoop which leaves you feeling all glowy inside. (Although do Americans use the word pub? Sometimes Brit words do rather stand out in fic) An excellent read if you're in need of a pick me up.

Part of the Heart universe.

When a hunt goes badly wrong Sam is lead to believe that Dean is dead. Dean meanwhile is captured and tortured at the local asylum. Sam rescues him, but Dean is suffering from amnesia and doesn't remember him.

Painful, beautiful story about Dean remembering who he is and the multi-faceted relationship he shares with Sam. The characterisation is wonderful - Sam makes me cry in this. He's utterly devoted (I love the little moment where we realise that he hasn't eaten for 2 days because he's been too terrified to leave Dean) and so determined to spend his life with this new Dean to make this damaged, amnesiac Dean understand that his place is by his side, whilst at the same time he's desperate for "his" Dean to come back. Sam's realisation that Dean knows nothing about them, about how far their relationship has came from its awkward early stages is heartbreaking. It's also fascinating to see a Dean unaware of his history questioning his role as a hunter.

I have a real desire at the moment for wingfic. Anybody got any good recs? I do remember reading one story which I should have recced on here about Dean becoming an angel after being accidentally stabbed by Sam with some kind of magic knife. I remember it ends with Sam having to cut away Dean's wings. It was very good and I just can't remeber the name of it. Anyone know?

And finally a rec which is hands down the silliest Supernatural story I've ever read.

So I'm all booked up for Asylum the Supernatural convention that Jared is attending next year in the UK. Thanks to a friend who booked in advance for me I have the incredibly low ticket number of 10! Really looking forward to this one - I go to a lot of conventions anyway (three so far this year, a Battlestar Galactica event this weekend and a Serenity con in September) but I am ridiculously excited at the prospect of meeting Jared! Is anyone else going to this? I would love to meet up with other fans out there - get a chance to put a face to a user name!

So how did I manage to miss that Ben Edlund has joined the writing team? I love that guy - his Smile Time episode of Angel was hilarious and his Jaynestown episode of Firefly was comic genius. I guess they've bought him in to handle the quirkier episodes. Which is promising because I confess I wasn't a fan of Hell House - the show's first attempt to do out and out comedy. The whole endeavour fell rather flat for me and the boys just seemed really uncomfortable in that episode - their laughter just felt very forced.

And finally a rec: Midnight at the Majestic by maygra.

Written for the 50 states challenge and set post Devil's Trap the story features a grief stricken Sam and Dean searching for echoes of the dead in Georgia. Highly atmospheric and rich with detail this story is a feast for the senses and the Sam/Dean characterisation is as superb as I'vecome to expect from maygra. Love the details of Dean staring down the gator and Sam protecting Dean and his grief from the ghosts he sees all around. And I love the ending - the one ghost that Sam can't see - but Dean can. Wonderful.
