My lovely flist is awash with completely awesome pictures of John Barrowman filming with David Tennant and Freema today in Cardiff.

John Being Interviewed for Doctor Who Confidential

First shot of the Trio together

Looks like they are going to have Jack explaining to the Doctor how he got back from Game Station 5 and unfortunately it sounds like they'll be relying on a techno babble mcguffin (someone overheard Barrowman saying something like "If you're going to be stuck at the end of the universe get stuck with a Time Agent with a vortex manipulator.")

Excited beyond belief at the fact that the rumours about John Simm appearing are true. He'll be playing the new Prime Minster Saxon and many people saw him filming today (although noone seems to have gotten a picture of him). I guess we still don't strictly know that he's playing The Master (although I still can't believe that The Independent just threw in that piece of information without warning at the end of their interview with him last weekend) but I'm assuming he is. I do rather love the fact that it was the Doctor who was responsible for Harriet Jones falling from power - which would mean that ultimately its his fault if The Master ends up ruling Britain!

The most interesting thing to me is that it looks like they intend to have Jack return to Torchwood very soon after he left. The finale is clearly set in the present day with Saxon having just been elected (there were vote Saxon posters on the music hall door in the Torchwood episode Captain Jack Harkness). There have been several reports of seeing Barrowman and Tennant filming what looks like a farewell scene which ends with Jack running towards the Torchwood tower. I'm pleased that we have Jack returning to Torchwood of his own accord as for next season to work I definitely think we need to see some indication that Jack wants to be there - that he isn't just biding his time until something better comes along. Having Jack choose to go back means I'm hopeful for the return of happy go lucky Jack in season 2.

The fact that they're also having Jack return so soon after he left also I guess makes his actions in leaving his team less of a betrayal (I guess its questionable whether that's a bit of a cop out on the parts of the writers to make Jack more likeable). It should hopefully mean that we won't have episode after episode of the team angsting over Jack's return if he actually happily goes back within a few weeks of leaving.

Aw I'm getting all excited about watching the new series now!

I only have few people on my flist who watches DW so if you hadn't posted this I probably wouldn't have seen it.
Luckily I did and now you have me all excited for the new season as well ;)
It's only like a month or so away, right?

I was really hoping Jack would stay around for longer, but just the fact that he's back makes me really happy

I don't mind Jack going back to Torchwood after a short time with the Doctor and Martha - to have had him re-appear after a year or so would have made him seem compeletely uncaring of the team he'd left behind.

The new series normally starts around Easter time so early April - still a way to go yet unfortunately!

I'm just waiting for the photos of Barrowman, Tennant and John Simm together - so much pretty in one shot! It will also be particularly entertaining as Tennant and Barrowman will tower over Simm!

Yeah logically it makes much more sense this way but I still would've liked him to stay longer ;)

April isn't that far away. I only finished watching the show a few months back so this wait is shorter for me.

Um, who exactly is John Simm? Didn't get that part and the whole The Master thing. Was it something I missed while watching Who?

John Simm plays Sam Tyler in Life on Mars (and has also been in other things including State of Play). There have been interviews with him everywhere because of the new series of Life on Mars and The Independent published an interview with him last weekend in which they just announced in the last line that he was playing The Master.

The Master is an old school Who villain - he's an evil Time Lord which is going to have even more resonance this time around as the new canon he'll be the only other Timelord in existence apart from the Doctor. The Saxon references (which is another ongoing theme like Bad Wolf and Torchwood) started to creep in towards the end of last season. There was a reference to Saxon on the front page of a newspaper in the episode Love and Monsters (the only episode I absolutely loathe of the new series), the name was mentioned in the Christmas episode when the soldiers fired on the Arachnos ship and it also cropped up in Torchwood.

Oh okay, thanks for clearing that up. I've never seen any of the old Who and I'm not really in fandom so I was a bit confused there :)
