Actually I'm not sure that there is a hell of a lot to say about this episode. It was enjoyable certainly - much more enjoyable than the trials and tribulations of the feisty Harvelle gals but the whole episode felt rather unsubstantial to me. There just didn't seem to be very much to it. The entire exercise seemed to be more about giving Linda Bliar 40 minutes of material for her show reel than about being a really good episode of Supernatural.

The plot itself was a little bit pedestrian - actually worse than last week's. Human killers were done far better (although just as stereotypically) in The Benders. I also thought the villain of the piece was completely bland and unmemorable. I mean if they're going to write a scene in which Dean is slammed face first into a wall with his hands handcuffed behind him they could at least have tried to find a decent actor to play the cop. Can you imagine what William Fichtner would have done with that scene?

I thought Linda Blair did a nice job. There was a slight sense that she was trying too hard in several of her scenes. I couldn't see the character - just Linda Bliar acting. I think she was aware that it was the biggest shot she'd had in years and she was desperate not to screw it up. Still the character was engaging and warm and she played off Jared very well indeed. In fact this is the only episode they've done so far that has separated the brothers for the majority of the running time and I haven't hated it. Compared to other episodes Jensen didn't get that much screen time but because Linda and Jared were doing such a nice job in their scenes together you didn't quite feel Dean's absence in the same way that I found myself desperately missing sweet little Sammy while watching last week's Dean/Jo scenes.

I thought the appearances of death omen Claire were very freaky and nicely done by the special effects team. I've been quite impressed with them this year - last year soem of the effects were truly ropey but this year they seem to be aiming for a minimalist approach which creates a really unsettling tone. The sequence where Claire appeared to Linda Blair's character in the bathroom was quite unnerving.

I am eternally amused by the way they dress the motel room sets. This week is was some sort of 60's psychedelic look.

I hope to god it was Jared's stunt double heaving that sledge hammer about and breaking through that wall because otherwise - ouch!

I thought this week's episode was a nice look at the brothers from an objective perspective. Loved all the hints about how similar they are even if they themselves don't always realise it - calling the layer "Matlock" and working out the anagrams at the same time. But damn can Sammy lie. Considering the way this season seems to be headed with the question about whether Sam will turn bad up in the air - Sam's effortless ability to lie and sound incredibly sincere while doing it was actually a little chilling.

I liked Dean in this episode. I liked how he managed to be supremely confident and assured despite being knocked around by the police and finding himself handcuffed to a desk (I'm sure there's a fanfic in there somewhere!). I did however find it difficult to be too concerned for Dean's wellbeing when the killer had him at gunpoint. That should have been a chilling moment - instead the villain's poor acting coupled with the fact that Ackles seemed to be playing Dean's predicament for laughs made it difficult to fully connect with the scene.

All told definitely an odd episode. Enjoyable but pretty unmemorable ( hell I can't even remember the police characters names). I rather doubt it will be an episode that I will be raving about next May as the highlight of the season. Very much filler and as such it was an incredibly weird decision to air this during sweeps. Roll on next week!
