Random Rant
Aug. 15th, 2006 07:53 pmMan I have been so bored at work the past couple of days. It's all gone deadly quiet which isn't good because when I get bored I get distracted which is probably why I spent all day on Television Without Pity's Jensen thread defending poor Jensen from some of his more rabid fans.
I swear elements of Jensen's fanbase just baffle me. On the one hand they are incredibly loyal, they own everything he's ever been in and follow him from project to project yet they're also ready to rip his throat out in the blink of an eye if he does anything they perceive to be "wrong". The furore on the TWOP thread about that silly Norwegian interview the boys did beggared belief. Admittedly the interview was a bit of a publicist's nightmare. The boys were joking around and talking nonsense and the interviewer reported it straight without any indication as to tone which did make them sound like silly frat boys but the personal offense that some people took to Jensen possibly saying that Supernatural wasn't the most intellectual show in the world was actually rather worrying. But that was nothing compared to the response to this rather dubious report..
The post doesn't really hold water. It was initially published weeks ago to little fanfare on another Supernatural site - minus the lurid detail of Jensen looking at upskirt photos of girl's panties. Plus the girl gets his eye colour wrong and unless she was two inches away from that mobile phone screen there was no way she could have seen what was on it in a darkened club. But it was the response to it that made me want to hold me head and weep!
Firstly Simpatico (pretty much the sole reason why I stay away from TWOP's Supernatural forums now because her negative posts were driving me insane) was concerned about Jensen's "controversial" behaviour and then PipPip24 ( who is the perfect example of someone who is both a rabid fan and detractor at the same time - I don't think she's quite forgiven him for having sex with the playboy bunny) published her list of 10 reasons why Jensen Ackles is an alcoholic, junkie douchebag. Oh dear god in heaven! Ignoring for a moment the blatant homophobia that she reveals in her list poor Jensen just can't catch a break. If he drinks - he's an alcoholic. If he looks tired - he's probably on drugs. What's next? Raping, pillaging and murdering kittens?
Seriously is it something about Jensen that inspires this sort of schizophrenic impassioned reaction to the minutae of his everday life or are all fandoms like this?
And while I'm ranting Best Buy why did you have to go and break a poor overseas shopper's heart? I want my free Paley Festival dvd but you don't ship to the UK.
Finally though a small ray of sunshine in my day:
Amber Bensen has revealed that she has filmed a guest star role on Supernatural. Her character is apparently tough and sexy and she got to wear cowboy boots. Of the breakdowns for female characters released so far the one that best fits the "tough and sexy" concept is Alex. Given how violently opposed I am to the character (way to early in the season to be shoehorning in a girlfriend for Dean and a Insta Mom character in Ellen) the fact that Amber may be playing her actually fills me with cheer. Amber is a great actress and incredibly lovely in person. What delighted me the most though (and why I'm praying Amber is playing Alex rather than say Tessa the Reaper or the female Vampire leader in Bloodlust) is that she said it was a "one off role". Misconceived attempt to introduce a Dean love interest at a point at which his character should be shellshocked from the accident and grieving for his father done and dusted in one episode. Can I get a hell yeah!

Date: 2006-08-15 07:30 pm (UTC)As for Flaunt? I am very happy he was up for it. And just out of curiosity... what was the gay mag he and Jared were in? (smiles at teh thought)

Date: 2006-08-15 08:27 pm (UTC)I have never understood people who devote all their time and energy into following an actor purely to criticise them. Life is way too short.
The gay mag the boys were in is called Axm. They got a decent 4 page spread- although the promo shots that they used to illustrate the article were pretty hideous.

Date: 2006-08-15 07:55 pm (UTC)There was this whole mess about another actor - another fandom - that pissed me off deeply last year. This actor said (about his recent work on a tv show )that it was amazing to work with such a talented cast. Some 'fans' decided that he was implying that the cast from his previous show wasn't talented and he shouldn't say something like that about a show that gave him such opportunity yadda yadda yadda.
So, in the end? Crazy people.

Date: 2006-08-15 10:12 pm (UTC)If i must know about them, I'll go by the opinion of folk who've worked with them, and to be honest, I've never heard a bad word said about either of them. In the interviews I've seen, both young men come across as pleasant, personable, funny. They sound like someone it would be great to have a drink with.
But really. Getting that worked up over an actor? Get a fucking life. That thing that happens when you turn off the telly

Date: 2006-08-16 02:49 pm (UTC)Simpatico infuriates me to the point where I want to kill someone and PipPip24 is just genuinely scary. Demian gave her a slap down for her homophobic rantings which did at least amuse me somewhat.

Date: 2006-09-02 10:25 pm (UTC)Unofrtunately as TWOP hasn't banned her and as noone seems to have the will to smack down some of the more extremely obnoxious commentators in the actor threads they're generally best avoided. They're not even worth checking for the piccies because a picture will be posted once and then 10 people will copy the same link in their reply so the thread gets tiresome to navigate with the same photo being linked about 15 times in the space of two pages!
I've found that most of the sensible level headed discussion of the show goes on on LJ these days.

Date: 2006-08-15 10:48 pm (UTC)That's one thing I've noticed about some hardcore fans. They tend to be extremely critical, to the point where they deeply upset themselves whenever they think canon isn't going how it "should." Of course, that's usually balanced by the emanations of bliss they produce when canon pleases them, which is something I enjoy sharing. Totally in it for the squee, can so totally do without the wank. Life's too short, y'know?
(And yay! for no Dean-girlfriend, if it's true!)

Date: 2006-08-17 02:11 pm (UTC)I did read both of the posts. I'd love to have read the edited homophobia one, because I'm nosy.
Is anyone surprised that the guy is somewhat scared of his fans? If they act like that. From a third person view I found it funny, but I can imagine how some people (i.e. Jensen) could be incredibly offended.
Joining you in the hope that Amber plays Alex though. Should be interesting, she was nice in Buffy. (even though I really objected to the whole, Willow turning into a lesbian storyline). Her singing was incredible though. She has an amazing voice.
Oh and "hell-yeah!"

Date: 2006-08-17 03:48 pm (UTC)PipPip's pre-edited rant wrongly called Flaunt a gay magazine and said that Jensen appearing in the photo shoot sent "mixed messages" to the fans. Basically she implied that appearing in a gay mag was a deeply awful thing for Jensen to have done and was indicative of his alcoholic crack addled behaviour..or you know her being a deeply scary obsessive fan one of the two!
My hopes of Amber playing Alex have died a dismal death with the report on TV Guide saying that she's playing the female vamp in Bloodlust. I guess in CW terms she's too old to play Alex. I'm still praying that however they get she's a good actress. I've very uncertain about the introduction of Ellen and Alex. I'm actually more concerned about the introduction of Ellen to be honest - I don't like the fact that one episode after John apparently dies they introduce a mother figure who we know makes 2 appearances in the first 5 episodes cooing about how she worries about the boys. I really don't like this uncomfortable insta family vibe they seem to be aiming for. It doesn't fit well at all with the relatively solitary life that the boys had growing up with John. If they can play happy now with other huntersand essentially end up having a "home base" at Ellen's bar it makes a mockery of their backstory and makes John's choices seem insanely wrong.

Date: 2006-08-17 09:38 pm (UTC)Mixed messages to fan? Surely it's not really the fans business whether he's gay or not. Though I sincerely doubt he is.
Probably a good thing I didn't read it then, or I would have been offended. Nothing wrong with being in a gay mag. I'm glad they were open minded enough to agree to it.
Female vamp sounds interesting. And the Ellen and Alex storyline seems a bit...dubious. Surely they would've mentioned the before? Like Caleb, Bobby, Pastor Jim? Seems a little tacky. But I will try to be open minded. It will largely depend on who the actresses are.
And it was made pretty clear that there was no-one John could really trust his kids with. (Because the others were hunters too, so there was no stable upbringing.)
We shall see, I guess.

Date: 2006-09-09 05:55 am (UTC)However, I was a journalism student and understand some of the press game and I think because a lot of the media are idiotic and ruthless, it is in the actor's interest to be careful. (and not too repetitive.)
I have noticed that there are some fans of his that defend defend defend so blindly that it makes me crazy, and if I were Jen, I'd be more afraid of them than people that called me on stupid things I do...
That said - I agree wholeheartedly with your post.
