Not Waving but Drowning!
Feb. 9th, 2007 05:19 pmMan this week has completely sucked. Its typical isn't it. I had a fantastic weekend at the Pegasus convention in London. It was a Stargate Atlantis con but that didn't really matter because I've never seen an episode of it and only actually came for the parties! And what fun parties they were. We all dressed up as superheroes on the Saturday with me squeezing myself into a Catwoman outfit. It was probably the first time that the guests came over to have their pictures taken with us rather than us paying to have our pictures taken with them. Then there was much dressing up of pretty boys as Jedis with myself as chief dresser. Good fun!
So naturally the second I get back to work its been 14 hour days. I haven't had a moment to rest this week. I went to a meeting yesterday and got back into london at midnight! Haven't downloaded any of my shows - I'm two weeks behind on Greys and won't be able to download the new Supernatural (which looks completely awesome - which is a bonus because I really did find last week's episode dull) until tonight.
I'm fearing that my Supernatural love is waning a tad. It isn't that I don't like it and I do adore the boys its just that its not really rocking my socks off and hasn't for a while. Its gotten a tad samey. Plus I appear to have lost my adoration for the Wincest (that pesky Jack and Ianto seem to have crept into my affections) it was all feeling a little repetitive.
Speaking of fanfic where are the gen Torchwood fics? I appreciate that a show which has cannon slash - well its unlikely that anyone was going to be rushing to write gen but I'd quite like to read a few which has Jack and Ianto in an established relationship but where the relationship isn't the focus of the fic. Any recs?
Off to see Avenue Q tonight - hopefully Naoko Mori will be in tonight's performance (she wasn't the last time I went!). On a plus note though I am doing rather well getting Who/Torchwood autos through the post. Got a response from Eve Myles (Gwen Cooper) in record quick time. She signed a Torchwood promo postcard (in biro no less!) now all I need is for Barrowman and Gareth to reply. Must write to Burn at some point too!
Here's hoping next week is a bit more chilled.

Date: 2007-02-09 09:42 pm (UTC)Supernatural is very variable, tis true. When it's good, it can knock it out of the park, but lately there have been some dull episodes. I just zone out and look at the pretty... and really, there's not much on to compete with it at the moment. But I'm still reading good Wincest if I find it. Also Jack/Ianto - I'm promiscuous *heh*
Mind you, there are some new shows coming up & old faves returning - Harry Dresden, Heroes, Rescue Me, Boston Legal... I'm going to be busy taping!
I hope you have better luck at Avenue Q tonight. And if you have time on Sunday (and access to the E! channel), remember that John Barrowman is sharing red carpet duty with Ruby Wax for the Baftas. Now that could be fun!

Date: 2007-02-09 10:36 pm (UTC)I did come across a lovely Gwen/owen set after when she goes to his flat, but I'm damned if I can find it.

Date: 2007-02-10 12:20 am (UTC)As for Owen - well I love Burn Gorman as an actor but I just don't find him cute so I tend to avoid Owen/Gwen (plus of course most writers write him appallingly!).
Jack/Ianto is the prevalent ship- but of the 20 or so fics listed on a daily basis in the newsletter barely 2 will be any good. I do enjoy the ship but its a show which really lends itself to good strong scary -properly adult gen. But apart from Mercurial Wit's stories and Poisontaster's Jack/Tosh piece where they got stuck in World War II there's not a lot of it about. I think that was one of the reasons why I was tiring of the Wincest- can only read so many pwps!

Date: 2007-02-10 12:32 am (UTC)In SPN, I'm really only reading authors I'm a fan of already, unless they rec something, because the PWPs are awful, the het's worse and there's barely any gen. I realy don't have time to read shit.
Poisontaster wrote J/T? How'd I miss that?

It's mild Jack/Tosh but its really good and haunting.
I would say 95% of the Torchwood fics produced are dire (same with Doctor Who btw) - everything I've recced is decent but its not that easy a fandom to navigate - I've found entire rec lists filled with really crappy fics. I think part of the reason is that a lot of the SPN authors I love have turned out to be in their 30's and 40's and that maturity shines through in the fic. The vast majority of the Torchwood writers are under the age of 24 and it shows. I'm actually really quite surprised that Jack/Ianto appeals to the kids. I'd thought they'd be all about Jack/Gwen or Gwen/Owen.
