Torchwood Finale Ramblings
Jan. 1st, 2007 11:25 pmI'm willing to forgive Torchwood for a horribly uneven season because that two part finale was absolutely fucking fantastic!
OK so the time travelling old guy plot line was distinctly odd and didn't quite work and silly Godzilla style CGI monsters should be banned but oh god the rest of it... Loved the episode set in 1941 - very haunting and all the moments with Jack and his namesake were beautiful- also Owen/Ianto fighting was sheer genius. And the finale was brilliant - everyone failing Jack and then subsequently reconciling with him, redeemed Gwen, canon Jack/Ianto and an ending which segues beautifully into Doctor Who season 3. Wonderful.

Date: 2007-01-02 01:15 am (UTC)The second episode - well the plot is completely bollocks really - large CGI monsters, people dying etc which all ends with a rather sneaky re-set button which renders the events of it pretty moot. But basically Eve Myles proves that she's a hell of an actress (which I think had definitely been in doubt before now), the entire team turn against Jack and he gets shot in the head (again!), he then defeats the CGI baddie - dying in the process and remains dead for several days while Gwen sits with him and we get a completely heartbreaking scene of Ianto crying while smelling Jack's scent on his coat - Jack wakes up hugs everyone and kisses Ianto in front of the rest of the team. Everyone's happy and then the Doctor's severed hand in the jar goes nuts, we hear the sound of the TARDIS engines and then Jack is gone.
I've never quite seen anything like it - it was like romantic gothic slash fiction on screen. Really beautiful scenes of Jack connecting and falling in love with his namesake, about as close to canon Jack/Doctor as you're going to get and absolute canon Jack/Ianto. It was a slasher's dream come true. I'm definitely downloading them as soon as someone puts them up.
I had a bit of a Torchwood day - watching various John Barrowman clips on youtube - I hadn't realised what a fantastic voice he has and his appearance on Jonathan Ross was hilarious.

Date: 2007-01-02 01:33 pm (UTC)But yeah damn that finale just covered all the bases. The Jack/Jack romance was horribly unrealistic for the time period but it was portrayed so movingly I didn't care. I know they'd hinted throughout the season that Jack's great love was the Doctor but I didn't expect them to spell that out as mcuh as they did during the finale and the Jack/Ianto kiss was just wonderful (I also loved The Jack/Owen hug -I think Owen has been dismally written but the actor is great). Just loved Jack announcing their relationship to the rest of the team and not caring who knows about it. And of course just when they are truly a team the Doctor appears and steals him away.....
I loved it but it kinda makes slash fiction redundant when its all up there on the screen!

Gah, the cliffhanger. I love it. Gives me some hope of the Doctor showing up in Torchwood or Jack being in DW S3.

Date: 2007-01-03 01:34 am (UTC)Jack is definitely appearing in DW season 3 - he's signed up for the last 3 episodes. Tennant will sadly never appear in Torchwood as Torchwood is seen as an adult show and the BBC have to keep the Doctor Who brand "clean" (you'll notice that Jack despite all the male/male snoggage rarely swears because that wasn't seen as appropriate for a character that would be re-appearing in DW)and kiddie friendly. Can't wait for series 3 - it should start around Easter.
