Work has been hideously busy lately and weekends have been taken up with Christmas shopping and Christmas drinks so I haven't had much time to keep up with my flist so apologies if I owe anyone any comments. Plus my attempt at making mince pies failed dismally - they looked more like mince pie vol-u=vents

Anyway here's some recs:

Little Rattle Stilt by [livejournal.com profile] angstslashhope

No sex, no violence, no blood and guts and yet this is without a doubt one of the most distressing Supernatural fics I've ever read. Little Sammy is taken away from his family by "kindly" concerned adults at his school. Sam's fear and confusion over what is happening to him is incredibly upsetting to read. Utterly gut wrenching.

Unusual and affecting deathfic as the Winchester boys leave not with a bang but a whimper.

Our Beginnings Never Know Our Ends by [livejournal.com profile] faye_dartmouth

Well written angsty fic as Jess returns as a vengeful spirit hell bent on killing Sam.

Thanksgiving, Winchester Style by [livejournal.com profile] destina

Gorgeous thanksgiving story with Sam and Dean realising how truly grateful they are to have each other. Dean conjuring up probably the worst Thanksgiving meal ever is adorabe and heartbreaking at the same time.

Sam/Dean

And the porny, schmoopy version of Thanksgiving- very sweet.

That Seven Letter Word by [livejournal.com profile] mikhale

Sam/Dean

A believable and wonderful vision of Winchester domestic bliss. Really lovely.

Reap the Wild Wind by [livejournal.com profile] maygra

Companion tale fleshing out the background of Dead Men Tell Great Tales . Sam dies confronting the demon and becomes a reaper. The confrontation with the demon is incredibly gripping - my heart was in my throat reading it. Dean's pain and grief (which blinds him to Sam's presence) is heartbreaking and hard to read. The story effortlessly weaves in familiar characters Bobby, Missouri, Ellen, Ash and Jo in a compelling way that the show has yet to manage and also features an outstanding original character in The Preacher - someone I would happily read more about.

Also EVp 9 Humour and Hijinks (gen) is now up to download at [livejournal.com profile] spnfic_podcast. Check it out - I read an extract from High Minded by [livejournal.com profile] alethialia for it.

Torchwood

Is anybody else finding Torchwood unbelievably frustrating? The potential is there but they're just not living up to it. Tonight's episode bored me to tears. They've got the time period and the leeway to produce something exciting and innovative and instead we keep getting rather dull, poorly written and very deriative episodes. Cannibal villagers, sex crazed aliens, mind reading - done to death over the course of a million and one sci-fi shows and I'm way to jaded to consider girl on girl kissing exciting, envelope pushing television.

How many more times can they shoot John Barrowman posing iconically on a rooftop before the entire enterprise lapses into parody? The writing is a serious let down. They were supposed to be writing Doctor Who for adults and instead we have a weird mix of creaking old sci-fi storylines sitting very uneasily with sex driven storylines. And somebody give John Barrowman more than 6 lines for christ's sake!

So far its been incredibly disappointing - and I'm not holding out a lot of hope that its going to improve any time soon.
