I've just watched day five and its clearer now why ianto was killed off. I think Series 4 (if it happens) is going to be a Jack in outer space show completely unconnected to the Cardiff/Torchwood scenario. And to get Jack to leave they had to kill off Ianto.
I was incredibly sad about Ianto as Janto was the best thing about Torchwood (I still keep bursting into tears). But at least he got a beautiful death scene with Jack.
